A question that we all get asked at one time or another. Why DO you take pictures? Why do we wake up very early to catch a sunrise, when we could stay home in bed? Why do we spend hours and sometimes days working on pictures or learning new photography techniques?  Is it all a waste of time?

Taking pictures helps us see

Life is a never ending stream of situations. Some good, some bad. It can move very quickly and before you know it, many things have changed. Taking pictures allows us to slow life down and record what we see and even what we feel. Your camera can transform life into a photo album of events.

Photography, even after taking the picture can help us see what was really there. When you look through the viewfinder, you’re not just taking a picture, you’re recording the world as it is. Regardless of what you photograph, everything becomes a focal point of life as you saw it.

Being able to capture the world around us has many advantages.  First, it is a moment of time and light, an escape into a situation. It also creates a lasting reminder of the world at that exact point frozen in time.  There’s always light somewhere and finding it, seeing it, and painting with it has therapeutic effects on our emotions.  We can express ourselves through the pictures we take.  A language of light and dark, mixed with our inner emotions and displayed on the canvas of life.  We have the freedom to evoke these emotions, tell stories and provide the world with our unique vision.  When the world and life, get in the way, photography is always there to provide a retreat or an outlet.  For me personally, I feel most at home when I'm out in nature, listening to wildlife, or the wind and the world around me.  Taking pictures at these moments, reminds me of how I felt when I was there.
